Historic Masonry Restoration questions, answered

Why does historic brick need lime mortar?

Older brick is soft and porous. Lime mortar is softer and more breathable than the brick, so moisture and movement pass through the joints instead of cracking the brick itself.

Do you work in Boston historic districts?

Can brownstone be repaired instead of replaced?

Most brownstone damage can be patched with a compatible restoration mortar or repaired with a dutchman (a new piece of stone set into the old). Full replacement is rarely needed.

Is sandblasting safe for old brick?

No. Sandblasting removes the fired outer skin of the brick and leads to rapid water damage. We use low-pressure washing and masonry-safe cleaners.

How long does historic restoration last?

Properly done lime repointing typically lasts 50 years or more, and it protects the original brick far better than hard cement repairs.
