Recommended depths
- Walkways and patios: 6 – 8 inches of compacted dense-graded aggregate
- Driveways: 10 – 12 inches
- Clay or poorly draining soils: add depth and geotextile fabric
Compaction
Base should be compacted in 2–3 inch lifts with a plate compactor. Dumping 8 inches at once and compacting only the top is a common shortcut that leads to settling.
Drainage and slope
Patios should slope at least 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot away from the house.
